إن الماتريدية هي المکون لفريق أهل السنة والجماعة مع الأشاعرة ، ورئيس أهل السنة والجماعة في علم الکلام رجلان أحدهما حنفي والآخر شافعي أما الحنفي فهو أبو منصور الماتريدى، وأما الشافعي فهو شيخ السنة ورئيس الجماعة إمام المتکلمين الساعي في حفظ عقائد المسلمين أبو الحسن الأشعري البصري.
 وقد قام الماتريدية بجهد لا يقل عن جهد الأشاعرة في نصرة عقائد الإسلام بإيراد الحجج لها ودفع الشبهات عنها وکان موطنها بلاد ما وراء النهر.
  إلا أنه هذا الفريق من أهل السنة لم يأخذ حظه من الشهرة والذيوع کما هو الحال بالنسبة للأشاعرة.
وربما أرجع البعض سبب ذلک إلى أن نشأة الأشعري کانت بالعراق وهى في ذلک الوقت المرکز الثقافي للعالم الإسلامي، أما الماتريدي فقد نشأ ببلاد ما وراء النهر بعيداً عن مرکز العالم الإسلامي.

The Maturidism made an effort no less than the Ash'ari’s effort in supporting the beliefs of Islam, by citing arguments for them and deflecting suspicions about them, and their homeland was a country beyond the river.
 However, this group of the Sunnis did not get the luck of fame and popularity as is the case with the Ash'ari.
Perhaps some attributed the reason for this to the fact that Al-Ash’ari’s origins were in Iraq, which at that time was the cultural center of the Islamic world. As for the Matridi, he grew up in a country beyond the river, far from the center of the Islamic world.
