لقد جاء الإسلام بحفظ الضرورات الخمس وهي ( الدين والنفس والعرض والعقل والمال) وذلک حتى يعيش الفرد المسلم عيشة مطمئنة آمنة يتمکن من أداء الواجبات الدينية والدنيوية، ولما کانت ضرورة حفظ النفس وصيانتها من مقاصد الشريعة الإسلامية نجد الإسلام قد حرم قتل النفس بغير حق وأوجب أشد العقوبات على من ارتکب هذه الجريمة کما قال تعالى وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ ، قال الإمام البغوي (حرم الله تعالى قتل المؤمن والمعاهد إلا بالحق، إلا بما يبيح قتله من ردة أو قصاص أو زنا يوجب الرجم) ، وحفظ الإسلام النفس کذلک بتحريم قتل الإنسان لنفسه وإزهاق روحه بيده ، کما قال تعالى وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَکُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ کَانَ بِکُمْ رَحِيمًا  ، وقد توعد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قاتل نفسه بأشد الوعيد کما في حديث أبي هريرة، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم « من تردى من جبل فقتل نفسه، فهو في نار جهنم يتردى فيه خالدا مخلدا فيها أبدا، ومن تحسى سما فقتل نفسه، فسمه في يده يتحساه في نار جهنم خالدا مخلدا فيها أبدا، ومن قتل نفسه بحديدة، فحديدته في يده يجأ بها في بطنه في نار جهنم خالدا مخلدا فيها أبدا » .
Islam came to preserve the five imperatives (religion, soul, honor, reason and money) so that the Muslim individual could live a reassuring and secure life capable of performing the religious and worldly duties, and since the necessity of preserving and maintaining the soul is one of the purposes of Islamic law, we find that Islam has prohibited the unlawful killing of the soul and required the most severe penalties For the one who committed this crime, as God Almighty said, “Do not kill the soul that God forbids except with the truth.”
Imam Al-Baghawi said: (God Almighty has forbidden the killing of the believer and the institutes except with the right, except by what permits killing him of apostasy, retribution or fornication that necessitates stoning), and Islam preserves the soul as well by prohibiting the killing of a person himself and taking his soul into his hand, as God Almighty said: “Do not you kill yourselves, for God You were merciful , and the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, threatened to fight himself with the most severe threats, as in the hadith of Abu Hurairah, he said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever descends from a mountain and kills himself, he is in the fire of Hell, in it, for eternity, in which it will be eternal And whoever senses a poison and kills himself, so he feels in his hand in the fire of Hell, he will immortal in it forever.
